Building a deck or patio is a great way to add value to your home. But, as with any major project, there are many factors that need to be considered before getting started. This blog post will discuss some of the most important considerations when building decks or patios in Central Florida and provide helpful tips for homeowners looking at adding this type of outdoor living space to their property. Consideration #4: Maintenance & Safety Let's be honest, we all love the outdoors. Whether it's grilling up some burgers or lounging in a hammock under an oak tree, there is nothing like being outside and enjoying Mother Nature. There are a few things that you should keep in mind when building your deck or patio to ensure it lasts for years to come without any problems. The fourth consideration between a deck and a patio is maintenance and safety. Personally, here at Florida Pavers & Pergolas, we believe that this is one of, if not the most important consideration. When it comes to safety considerations, there are a few questions you want to think about. Anytime you have a raised platform, you have to pay particular attention to the safety measures that are taken when it gets built. A patio at a ground level really is very simple to make safe, but a raised platform is sometimes a bit more involved. So if you've got a lot of people, if you've got a lot of larger grown adults, we need to consider the support of the structure and we need to consider the rails. If we've got a lot of stairs, we need handrails, both sides. Let's not try to save money when it comes to safety. There are also other considerations like kids and pets, do we need to put special rails? Do we need to provide special gates? Do we need to pay special attention and is a deck more or less likely to be safe when we build it and we live on it with our families?
When it comes to maintenance, it really depends on the materials you decide to use. If you're using modern materials to build your deck and modern materials to build your patio, they're both low maintenance. Now, if you use pressure-treated materials, obviously that's going to require you to treat it every year.

If you choose to build a patio deck out of pavers, you are going to need to take care of them from the very beginning to ensure that the pavers stay in excellent condition for years to come. There is a lot that goes into paver maintenance, from general maintenance to proper cleaning methods and even best practice protection methods.
